For modern consumer units, it is true that it is rarely necessary to change the fuse box due to the deterioration of the board. Far more often it will be the case that the fuse board needs changing as a result of an upgrade or renovation to your home that requires a larger board.

1. RCD Split Load (from £400+VAT): This includes two RCDs and divides your house into two separate circuits - one RCD protects one half of the house, while the other protects the other half. In most cases, this means that If power were to be lost on one circuit, electricity would only be lost in that part of the house.

2. RCBO (from £500+ VAT): Each circuit in this type of fuse box is protected by its own RCD, meaning that if a fault were to occur in one circuit, you would only lose power to that single circuit.

SPD (surge protection) is recommended to be  fitted as standard in all our consumer units. This protects your household equipment from a potential lightning strike or surges in power which could damage sensitive equipment.

If your consumer unit does not have RCD protection, we recommend upgrading it. An RCD (residual-current device) is a safety protection device designed to protect against fire and electrocution. An RCD detects electric faults that go unnoticed by circuit breakers and switches off electricity automatically under faulty conditions.
